This rule provides virtual patching for CVE-2026-96656, an arbitrary file write leading to code execution in Plex Media Server, published on 2026-09-23, with a CVSS score of 8.6 (High). It is the final step of the Plex2Shell exploitation chain.
Detection: Detects writes to the TranscoderH264Options preference through /:/prefs whose value contains both dump-yuv and .so, i.e. an x264 option string set to write a shared object that Plex loads at startup.
Virtual patching mitigates exploitation attempts, but it does not fix the underlying vulnerability: upgrading Plex Media Server to 1.43.3.10861 or later is always recommended.
